In 1984, Lim Swee Eng started to take painting lessons on the medium of watercolour from Soh Siew Kiat. A competent and experienced watercolour exponent, Soh’s teaching was systematic, clear and effective. Lim mastered the fundamental techniques of the medium quickly. But it was the uncommon skills of Soh in demonstrating the uniqueness of watercolor that made a difference. Soh revealed that through swift and audacious brushstrokes, the watercolour artist could achieve visual nuances which reflected the artist’s excitement and emotion. With the interplay of colour, water and technical virtuosity it was possible to instill in the work tantalizing visual transparency and reflections. It was such demonstrations which captured Lim’s imagination making her realise that watercolor art could go beyond technical mastery to become artistic triumphs which enriched the viewer’s life.
PHOON POH WAI’S TUTORSHIP
In 2014, Lim began to take lessons from Phoon Poh Wai. They focused on oils as the painting medium. Phoon was an exceptional painting tutor who was very different from the art college instructor whose teaching was guided by a structured curriculum. Phoon’s artistic background was inimitable: a graduate of the prestigious St Martin College of Art in London where he majored in painting; a tour through Europe’s authoritative art museums of consequence where he surveyed their important permanent art collections – the National Gallery, London; the Musee du Lourve, Paris and Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam among them and what made Phoon’s teaching revealing and tantalizing was the fact that Phoon in the midst of his lessons, would highlight inspiring accounts of how brilliant artists in history of European art painted intriguing masterworks which stood the test of time, amongst Phoon’s favourites English painter, William Turner’s turbulent dramatic seascapes, 19th century; Dutch painter, Rembrandt’s self-portraits, 17th century and French Impressionist, Claude Monet’s awe-inspiring services of water-lilies early 20th century, after returning to Singapore, Phoon started to collect seriously; the scope of art-collecting in South East Asia was breadth taking magnitude. Phoon became one of the finest connoisseurs in South East Asian Art. Lim said, “As I venture into oil painting with famous artist Phoon Poh Wai’s guidance, my discovery of what this medium can bring excites me and it liberated me from my traditional notions of what art should be.”
THE PAINTING – JOY OF LIVING IN AISA
The above statement explains how Lim’s painting entitled Joy of Living in Asia was triggered off. How did she approach the problem of painting? Lim invented a stylized painting technique which gave her greater freedom in her visual expression. The ultimate result had many hallmarks: there was fun and gaiety, vibrant colours created a holiday mood and diverse customs heightened the enjoyment. The manipulation of the figures’ gestures further intensified the visual expression.
THE PAINTING – AT PLAY
Lim’s painting entitled, Two Eagles revealed many elements which help the viewer not only understand the work deeper but also enlighten him on the caliber of the artist. The key was the artist’s versatility. On the one hand, Lim was capable of creative works which emerged from the artist’s innate qualities – her imagination, her spirit of daringness experimentation, her daring execution and the exploitation of the forces of abstraction. This was reflected in her work entitled At Play.
On the other hand, Lim could create Two Eagles, a handsome painting which appealed to the viewer directly. It had other qualities. The hallmarks: meticulous execution, minute details observation, powers capturing microscopic details and clarity and harmony. Most unusual, the artist could express visual realism to the point that the two birds appeared to be chatting intimately and might take flight any moment. Abstract inventions and captivating realism – two extremes in one artist’s artistic gift. This is truly rare.
THE PAINTING – I Will Soar With You Above The Storm
Lim’s painting entitled “I will soar with you above the storm” was a reminiscence of Monet’s painting, Rocks at the Blle Ile because she too embraced the theme of the stormy sea coast. Lim’s approach, however, was sharply different. She was quick in the mastery of colours despite their complexity. In her work she deployed a sparing colour scheme – blues, greens, black and white – and succeeded in highlighting the multiple dimensions of the natural ambience in a flux: the interplay of space, volume, movement, speed, breeze and light. Then, on the spur of the moment, with a handful of audacious brushstrokes crisscrossing the work, she forged a work of turbulent force. The element which gave the work its intrigue – the mysterious fusion of light and colours, speed and emotion which gave the work its tantalizing moment of evolving change. That was the climax of the work.
